High-level conference on “Sustainability in Europe” | 15 May 2018
Green Budget Europe and People’s Budget will host a high-level conference on “Sustainability in Europe” on Tuesday 15 May at Martin’s EU Hotel in Brussels.
The conference will discuss measures necessary to be taken to reach sustainability and a circular, low-carbon economy, and what could be the role of the future EU budget in supporting this transition.
The following speakers have confirmed their participation to the conference, among others:
- Jyrki Katainen (Vice-President of the EU Commission)
- Janez Potočnik (Co-chair of International Resource Panel and former EU Commissioner for Environment)
- Monica Frassoni (President of the European Alliance to Save Energy)
- Anneli Jäätteenmäki (MEP and former Prime Minister of Finland)
- Petri Sarvamaa (MEP and member of the Committee on Budgets)
The event will start with an introduction by Eero Yrjö-Koskinen (Executive Director of Green Budget Europe).
A series of presentations will follow, including the promotion of climate and sustainability in EU policy-making, with the participation of Janez Potočnik, Klára Hajdu (Co-leader of European People’s Budget campaign), Anneli Jäätteenmäki and Aldo Ravazzi-Douvan (Chief Economist of the Italian Ministry for Environment – T.A. Sogesid) and former Chair of OECD Committee on Environmental Taxation). After these presentations, a panel discussion will take place among Janez Potočnik, Klára Hajdu, Aldo Ravazzi-Douvan and Monica Frassoni. Déirdre de Búrca (SDG Watch Europe) will act as the moderator.
After the coffee break, Jyrki Katainen will give a keynote speech about the future of sustainable finance in Europe. This speech will be followed by presentations from Camilla Gunell (Deputy Premier for the Regional Government of Åland), Monica Frassoni and Petri Sarvamaa, who will discuss how to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement and the UN SDGs.
Kai Schlegelmich (President of Green Budget Germany) will close the session by providing a summary of the discussions and conclusions of the conference.
