Who are we?
Green Budget Europe (GBE) is a Brussels-based non-profit expert platform on Environmental Fiscal Reform (EFR), which was formally established during a founding meeting on 4 November 2014 in Brussels.
As the only pan-European experts platform focussed solely on EFR, GBE has a broad network of member organisations across Europe and is supported by economists and fiscal experts of international renown. From our office in Brussels, we bring together representatives of business, international organisations, ministries, NGOs, political decision-makers, the research community and civil society at EU level, in individual European member states, and internationally.
Our aim is to promote a transformation of Europe’s budgets and tax systems to ensure that Europe in the 21st century is environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. We achieve our goals through knowledge-exchange and information-sharing and a combination of research and advocacy work at EU level and within EU Member States. Ultimately, GBE will work to foster a broad-based, cross-party consensus in favour of environmental fiscal reform with the support of a wide range of stakeholders.
GBE was established in 2008 as a project of the NGO Green Budget Germany (or Forum Ökologisch-Soziale Marktwirtschaft – FÖS) after a meeting of EFR experts united in their vision of a pan-European organisation to promote environmental fiscal reform. Since then, GBE has continuously expanded its activities, becoming an increasingly well-known and respected voice in Europe. In 2013, we opened an office in Brussels and became an independent organisation in 2014.
