On the occasion of the 6th World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists (WCERE) to be held on 25-29 June in Gothenburg, GBE will organise a policy session on circular economy on Wednesday 27 June at 13:45 hrs.
The event, entitled “Best practices and policy requirements to achieve circular economy objectives”, builds on the commitment of many countries to promote circular economy objectives and to aim for a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy.
As current policies do not provide the necessary framework for a decisive, systemic change that this would require, GBE and the Finnish Innovation Fund (Sitra) have gathered a number of specialists from the international community to discuss the challenges lying ahead and how they could be overcome.
Mr Matti Kahra (Climate, Energy and Circular Economy Specialist at Sitra) will introduce the extensive work that Sitra has done so far in Finland in the field of circular economy. Ms Sarianne Tikkanen (Project Manager at GBE) will present preliminary results from the project, which aims to provide recommendations on best practices that could be introduced in the Finnish context to promote circular economy objectives. Ms Susanne Åkerfeldt (senior Adviser at the Swedish Ministry of Finance) will discuss Swedish experiences in promoting circular economy objectives. Mr Aldo Ravazzi-Douvan (Chief Economist at the Italian Ministry of Environment) will give an overview on the potential and use of market-based instruments at international level to enhance environmental sustainability. Prof. Paul Ekins (Director of the Institute of Sustainable Resources at University College London) will provide an outlook on current experiences and main challenges in introducing circular economy measures in Europe.
The session will be chaired by Mr Janez Potocnik, Co-Chair of the UN International Resource Panel – IRP and former European Commissioner for the Environment.
